Child Life Specialist

OB SUMMARY/DUTIES TO INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO: Provides basic age appropriate situation-based assessments to foster positive coping with outpatient care activities through implementation of person and family centric intervention plans. Provides developmentally appropriate procedural education. Provides active preparation and support for interventional activities such as venipunctures / central access device access / initiation of IV therapy / bone marrow procedures / blood factor administration. Provides age appropriate educational materials to promote understanding of disease/treatment on part of patient/parent/siblings/extended family members. Works actively as a member of patient/family professional support team in a family centric manner. Works with hospital-based Child Life Specialists to assure positive continuity of care - may involve occasional visits during inpatient stays. Participates in daily patient care huddles, weekly team/care meetings, child/family care meetings, school visits, home visits, Bleeding Disorder Clinic, Survivorship Clinic and Camp Hope. Serves as a liaison with NLH Foundation in advancing support for patient/family activities/material needs. Occasional evening and weekend program-based activities may require flexing of scheduled hours. 
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree (in any field of study) from an academic institution accredited by an organization that is recognized by either the US Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation or the international equivalent AND additional coursework as specified by the Association of Child Life Specialists 600 hours of internship – under the supervision of someone with CCLS credentials – this most often occurs PRIOR to completion of the academic degree. Graduation from an ACLP-endorsed child life academic program (during the period of endorsement) or 10 college courses in the following content areas: Child Life Course Taught by a CCLS 2 Child Development Courses Family Systems Course Play Course Loss/Bereavement or Death/Dying Course Research Course Three Additional Courses For each of the 10 required courses, it is recommended that students take a 3-credit course or the equivalent to have an appropriate depth of instruction. A minimum of one full course must be completed for each of the required areas of study. (A minimum of two courses are required for the child development requirement.) For a course to count, the required content must be the primary focus of the course

EDUCATION PREFERRED: Bachelor's Degree in Child Life, Education or Child Development
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE PREFERRED: 6 - 9 months in medical setting. Prior experience working with Microsoft Office Word, Excel preferred. 
CREDENTIAL REQUIRED: Child Life Specialist Certification within one year of hire; age appropriate CPR certified or within 6 months of hire. 
OTHER SKILLS REQUIRED: Ability to read, write and speak English. Ability to communicate in a warm hospitable effective manner in person and by phone. Flexibility. Ability to work with a variety of people across a variety of professions in a variety of settings. Ability to learn basic computer skills. Ability to identify own learning needs. Ability to work independently. Ability to recognize need for assistance and seek it in a timely manner. Ability to prioritize work responsibilities and work efficiently in the face of a variety of every changing request and demands on time. Ability to care for self and build supportive relationships with co-workers.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Busy outpatient care environments (occasional acute care). Office. Travel required to variety of care areas, both inpatient (EMMC) & outpatient (LFCC), within EMMC / LFCC as well as other departments supporting Child Life Specialist activity. Individual and family homes for home visits. School setting for school visits. Community for participation in educational offerings.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Sitting. Standing. Walking. Carrying light objects (10-15 pounds). Hearing (normal volume speech, in person and on phone). Visual acuity permitting work with: VDT, from analysis, review of handwritten material, visual cues critical to understanding client/family/staff/physician/co-worker communication. Capacity to concentrate in a busy and often stressful environment. Occasional transport of individuals by wheel chair
