CDC Clinical Surveillance and Informatics Fellowship

CDC Office and LocationA fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch (WDPB), Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases (DFWED) of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research ProjectNCEZID aims to protect public health caused by a wide range of infectious diseases, focusing on diseases that have been around many years, emerging diseases, and zoonotic diseases. The Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch (WDPB) is an integrated branch with teams of epidemiologists, microbiologists, engineers, and bioinformaticians coordinating to protect and improve health domestically and globally by promoting healthy water. WDPB laboratories, often partnering with state and local public health agencies, develop advanced molecular solutions for sampling, detection, tracking, and assessment methods in a truly One Health approach to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH)-related disease. 

Joining DFWED, the selected participant will conduct research in the Clinical Detection and Surveillance Lab Team in the Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch to provide scientific support for laboratory research related to parasitic disease surveillance and outbreak investigations. 

Learning ObjectivesSpecific activities may include:

  1. Participate in the management of sequence and wgMLST data submitted to a national database for Cryptosporidium
  2. Observe how to be a liaison between multiple state and federal stakeholders during outbreak investigations, including epidemiologists, microbiologists, and environmental scientists
  3. Perform ongoing QA/QC measures for data submissions and provide troubleshooting assistance for participating public health laboratories
  4. Maintain the internal laboratory database following quality standards
  5. Contribute to the coordination of the design and programming of the internal laboratory database and national sequence and wgMLST database
  6. Prepare reports for outbreak investigations and system performance

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: August 21, 2022.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.

Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's or master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:

  1. Strong dry laboratory and analytical skills in the area of molecular microbiology, health informatics, and/or bioinformatics 
  2. Strong quantitative skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Access or other relational database management systems; and other Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  3. Strong communication skills, including experience developing communication tools such as newsletters, presentations, and other written products
  4. Excellent time management and organizational skills and the ability to comfortably multi-task
  5. Excellent skills for preparing written documents and giving oral presentations
