Learning Support Specialist

Job Summary
The UW-Madison College of Letters & Science Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) promotes the values of a liberal-arts education and provides an enriching, inclusive community for L&S students from populations that have been historically underserved by higher education, including first-generation students, low-income students, and underrepresented students of color. CAE provides academic advising, learning support, peer mentoring, community-building events, the Summer Collegiate Experience program for incoming first-year students, access to other High Impact Practices, and graduate school and career preparation.

CAE's Learning Support program provides one-on-one and small-group academic mentoring by request. We also provide programming such as pre-exam drop-ins for select classes and an end-of-semester study event. Learning Support and Academic Advising work very closely together in CAE to support our students academically. The Learning Support Specialist helps coordinate daily operations of the academic mentoring program, plans and executes Learning Support programming, helps supervise student workers, and serves as an academic advisor for CAE students. The Learning Support Specialist also works closely with other staff to promote the overall mission and objectives of CAE.

Responsibilities
Contributes to the development, implementation, administration, coordination, and evaluation for one or more academic programs to ensure effectiveness in meeting departmental and student development goals and initiatives. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.
  • 35% Utilizes independent judgement regarding development, implementation, promotion, and evaluation for one or more academic programs, initiatives, or events
  • 20% Identifies program, needs, contributes to the development of unit workflows, schedules logistics and secures resources for meetings, events, and interviews
  • 10% Coordinates program components and evaluates program effectiveness and provides recommendations for improvement
  • 15% May supervise the day to day activities of one or more academic programs and resolves issues exercising discretion to meet unit goals.
  • 20% Provides holistic academic advising and participates in activities and programs that support the mission of CAE.

Qualifications:
Required:
-Bachelor's degree
-Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Some understanding of issues and challenges faced by minoritized students at a predominantly white university and a desire to learn more.
-Proficiency with data gathering, entry, and manipulation in programs such as MS Excel, Google Sheets, and Google Forms and a desire to learn more.
-Ability to communicate effectively and interact positively with staff and students.
-Strong organizational skills; ability to work independently and complete multiple short and
long-term projects.

Preferred:
-Some full or part-time experience working with students in a secondary and/or higher education setting.
-Experience tutoring, mentoring, or teaching at the college level.
